Barbara Alcaraz Silva

Barbara Alcaraz Silva is senior vice president for SVB’s Startup Banking Life Science Practice. Based in San Francisco, Barbara and her team provide banking solutions to breakthrough companies from Northern California to Seattle. A scientist by training, Barbara calls on her academic background, professional experience and intellectual curiosity to develop a deep understanding of each founder’s game-changing vision. Daily, she works with scientists and entrepreneurs who are making an impact in the life science and healthcare fields, and she thrives on giving them the financial tools they need to succeed.

Prior to joining SVB in 2018, Barbara served as senior investment fellow at Life Science Angels, a premier group of angel investors in the life science field. In this role, Barbara screened companies for potential investment and worked with up-and-coming biotech entrepreneurs as well as the investors who funded them. Earlier in her career, Barbara co-founded a startup company that focused on tracking biological aging.

Barbara’s career has also encompassed 10 years of extensive experience in cancer and aging research. For both her scientific and entrepreneurial work, she has been recognized with several national and international awards in science, teaching and mentoring, including a Ford Foundation Fellowship from the National Academy of Sciences. Barbara holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology and a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, both from the University of California, Irvine.

As an avid promoter of diversity in science, entrepreneurship and venture capital, Barbara finds it gratifying to mentor students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Outside of work, Barbara enjoys spending time with family; in fact, she rates spoiling her mother as one of her favorite pastimes.
