Barbara Alcaraz Silva

Barbara Alcaraz Silva is a director, startup banking, for Silicon Valley Bank in the San Francisco Bay Area. She and her team focus on delivering creative banking solutions for breakthrough companies in the Life Science and Healthcare sector for the Western Region. A scientist by training, Barbara calls on her academic background, professional experience, and intellectual curiosity to develop a deep understanding of each founder’s game-changing vision. Daily, she works with scientists, early-stage entrepreneurs and investors who are making an impact in life sciences and healthcare — and she thrives on giving them the financial tools they need to succeed.

Before joining Silicon Valley Bank in 2018, Barbara served as senior investment fellow at Life Science Angels, a premier group of angel investors in the industry. In this role, she screened companies for potential investment and worked with up-and-coming biotech entrepreneurs and the investors who funded them. Earlier in her career, Barbara co-founded a startup company that focused on tracking biological aging; her work includes 10 years of extensive experience in cancer and aging research. Barbara’s contributions to scientific and entrepreneurial fields have been recognized with several national and international awards in science, teaching and mentoring, including a Ford Foundation Fellowship from the National Academy of Sciences.

Barbara holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology and a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from the University of California, Irvine. She is currently a board member and scientific advisor to SV Latam Capital (SVLC), where she oversees the life science portfolio. As an avid promoter of diversity in science, entrepreneurship and venture capital, Barbara finds it gratifying to mentor students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Outside of work, Barbara enjoys spending time with family; in fact, she rates spoiling her mother as one of her favorite pastimes.
