Company culture update: the impact of technology on culture

How technology supports an achievement-oriented company culture

Building and sustaining a culture that truly supports the achievement of company goals is one of the toughest challenges business owners and managers face, notes Harvard Business Review. What happens when the industry or competitive arena shifts? What happens when technology changes how employees expect to engage? What about customers?

To best answer these questions, you need to consider the impact of technology on the culture of your organization.

The importance of a company culture

Consider how often you are interrupted by emails, phone calls, texts, online chats and social media during work. The impact of technology on culture is obvious.

Proper use of communication channels and other forms of technology can support a strong, cohesive company culture. After you purposefully decide what you want your culture to be, you can implement a strategy and leverage technology across your company.

Support your personnel

If your company culture is one where you champion high employee morale, engagement and growth, HR analytics can offer support. Data analysis tools can identify current challenges, like high turnover in certain roles, and successes, like reduced turnover as a result of a revamped onboarding process.

Predictive algorithms, like attrition modeling or high-performance recruit modeling, can help determine actions to take to counteract attrition trends. It can also recommend programs to recruit and retain high performers, which can drive retention, high morale and, ultimately, business results.

According to HR Technologist, vibrant and interactive advanced training programs and modules support sustained employee engagement. Also, micro training modules and training tied to social media, or that incorporate virtual reality, are engaging and thus drive usage and knowledge retention.

Provide regular feedback

A culture that champions promoting from within and providing opportunities to employees can use databases and software to not only make it easier to conduct employee evaluations more often (say, quarterly), but also to provide company performance or key indicators that relate to each employee's role. Furthermore, you can connect this to a platform that provides positive customer feedback about a person, role or department to the relevant people. This technology enables you to provide both real-time and employee-centric information.

Utilize a range of communication tools

To encourage open communication, relevant information needs to be provided in a succinct manner via convenient means. Because email can get overloaded, other tools such as online or app messaging and video chat conferencing may work better for groups of differing sizes. Messages from senior leadership can be broadcast via texts or mobile phone apps when employees work out in the field or do not have work computers.

These same tools support workforce flexibility, including partial or fully remote workers. By strategically utilizing these seemingly disparate forms of communication to support your personnel individually and in groups, you are leveraging technology firm-wide to reinforce and support an open, supportive culture of cohesion and collaboration.

These options show the obvious impact of technology on culture. The effect is even more pronounced if your company culture encourages collaboration, process improvement and education.
