You read a lot about the ineffectiveness of kids entering the workforce these days: addicted-to-texting, entitled flakes who are unprepared and lacking the basic skills they need to be successful in the workplace. It’s not true. At least not at the SupaFresh Youth Farm in Tigard, Oregon.
This program, backed by the Department of Labor, is training young people to be responsible, reliable workers with a good attitude.
As part of Silicon Valley Bank’s 30th anniversary community service campaign, my Portland-based co-workers and I had the opportunity to spend a day hauling dirt, building and planting garden beds and preparing the ground for winter with the youth who run this farm behind Durham Elementary School.
The nature of farming means these kids are getting their hands dirty, developing a strong work ethic and putting in a hearty, healthy days work. Aside from the lessons of farming, they’re learning about teamwork, leadership, supply chains, purchasing, product development, marketing and sales. I especially liked to see that they’re learning to approach work with a positive attitude.
Despite the tough work and the odds that many of these kids face, there’s no whining. Just good hard work. When you know the basics of running a business, have the physical strength of a farm kid and the guts to try something new, anything is possible. We see it every day with our entrepreneurial clients and we saw it at Supafresh. Keep up the good work, kids. The workforce needs you.
