About the Authors

Aaron Gershenberg is a founder of Silicon Valley Bank Capital’s fund of funds and direct funds, SVB Capital. Aaron joined SVB in 1999 and has been part of the venture capital industry since 1996. Under his leadership, the group has over $3.1 billion under management across fund of funds, direct funds and separate accounts. Aaron’s expertise is evaluating venture capital funds globally while building a unique value proposition for institutional investors seeking to access the innovation economy. He has published numerous articles on the future of venture capital and is frequently invited to speak and moderate panels at conferences in the US and Overseas.

Prior to joining SVB, Aaron opened FirstCorp’s Northern California office, a venture leasing group focused on early stage companies. In this capacity, Aaron was responsible for providing venture financing to more than 50 startup technology companies. Previously, Aaron was part of the investment banking group for Union Bank of California and the real estate consulting practice of Deloitte & Touche.

Aaron earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics and African Studies from Wesleyan University and a master’s degree in finance from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Aaron combines his passion for philanthropy with his love of the outdoors. In 1984 he joined 50 students biking from Boston to Los Angeles, raising money for Oxfam America. In 2003, Aaron was a founder of the Hearst Castle Best Buddies ride, a 100 mile ride from Carmel to the Hearst Castle benefiting the intellectually and developmentally disabled. He has raised over $3M to date for Best Buddies and serves on the International Board, 1st Move and board observer on Play Magnus- making chess part of the 2nd & 3rd grade curriculum to promote stem education.

He is an accomplished kite boarder and loves kiting on waves and the snow.
Beau Laskey is a Managing Director with SVB Capital and is responsible for sourcing and executing direct venture capital and private equity investments. Beau has spent the last 15 years in technology, finance and operational leadership roles where he focused on media, technology and consumer internet investment opportunities.

Prior to joining SVB, Beau was a Managing Director with Steamboat Ventures, The Walt Disney Company’s venture capital investment group. Earlier in his career, he was a Managing Director of EDF Ventures in San Diego, an early stage venture capital fund. A few of his key investments are Arbor Networks, GoPro, Greenplum, Photobucket, Sometrics and Zyray Wireless. Beau started his career as an officer in the SEAL Teams and deployed around the globe with several SEAL Teams. 

Beau received a BS in Economics and General Engineering with Merit as a graduate of the US Naval Academy, and received an MBA with Distinction in Entrepreneurship and Corporate Strategy from The University of Michigan Business School. 

Beau and his wife have three children that are avid skiers and sports enthusiasts. In his effort to help those that have served others, Beau is a supporter and committee member of the Navy SEAL Foundation and The Mission Continues.

Sulu Mamdani is a Partner with SVB Capital. He is responsible for leading the group’s direct investment activity in the U.S. and managing venture capital fund investments as well. Sulu brings more than 18 years of private equity, investment banking and operations experience to SVB Capital.

Prior to joining SVB Capital in 2006, Sulu co-founded Mazu Networks (acquired by Riverbed Technology, NASDAQ: RVBD), a network security company backed by Matrix Partners, Greylock Partners and Benchmark Capital. Prior to Mazu, he worked for The Carlyle Group, where he was responsible for managing venture capital investments in emerging technology companies, as well as advising portfolio companies on financial and strategic growth initiatives. Prior to Carlyle, Sulu was with James D. Wolfensohn, Inc., a boutique investment bank and financial advisory firm.

Sulu graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics from Harvard College and received an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Sulu and his wife Zahra are passionate about international development. They lived overseas in Mozambique prior to moving to California and they continue to support education and health programs in Africa and Asia. Last summer they introduced their interest to their two young children on a month-long trip to Mombasa, Kenya.
