Learn more about SVB 30 Years | 30 Causes
Over the past several months, each SVB office has dedicated time to serve its local community and lend a hand to uplift people and improve valuable places. Our 30 Years|30 Causes campaign is giving our employees in locations around the world an opportunity to put our energy to work for many great causes. In India, a team of thirteen SVBers gathered for an afternoon with the children at the Don Bosco Shelter Home in Mumbai.
The mission of the is to provide a safe and happy environment for deserted children who are living in the streets without a home. The organization – which was formed in Mumbai in 1987 – provides a home for almost 100 boys within the age groups of 10 and 18 in Mumbai and its surrounding cities. In addition to providing basic food and shelter, the shelter is staffed by people who work diligently to empower the children, imparting education and skill-based training to help them rebuild healthy, independent lives. Many of the children are able to return to school and/ or learn a trade while spending time at the Don Bosco Home. The shelter also finds suitable permanent homes for youth, essentially giving them a chance at a more hopeful life.
Our Mumbai team, joined by five teammates from Bangalore, enjoyed working with the children on a number of science and educational projects throughout the afternoon. Between our studies and playing several games of cricket and table tennis, we had an opportunity to talk to the children who were all very friendly and enthusiastic. Even our youngest volunteer – the 9-year old daughter of one our teammates – was glad to have given up a fun activity day at her school to spend time with the children at the shelter.
The presence of Street children is an urban phenomenon all over the world, and India is no exception. In the city of Mumbai alone there are an estimated 200,000 children on the street. All of us at some point have looked at these children as they have approached us at traffic lights and felt a concern for society’s indifference toward these kids. The decision to spend time at the Home and get to engage with the kids was something that the team felt strongly about. It was not just a way for us to learn about the challenges the kids face, but also a way to help them make a caring connect with the world around them through projects, discussions and games. We are looking forward to doing this as an annual activity here in India moving forward.
If you’re not able to give your time, there are other ways to help the Don Bosco Home continue their mission in India. You can log into their website http://sites.google.com/site/shelterdb/about-us to know more.
