Venture capital-backed emerging companies in the information technology, life sciences and cleantech sectors continue to outpace the economic expansion and to boost hiring — but with significant differences driving the various sectors — SVB Analytics' latest quarterly research shows.

Among the findings:

  • VC-backed emerging companies in the information technology, life sciences and cleantech sectors posted GDP-beating but sustainable sales growth rates for their respective markets in Q4 2010.
  • The information technology sectors — software and hardware — continued to increase their spending on staffing for sales and administrative operations. But they did so at differing rates — reflecting the bifurcated, sector-specific growth in the current economic expansion.
  • Hardware and life sciences sectors experienced substantial, double-digit year-over-year gains in sales growth, and robust improvements in operating margins.  However, the cleantech sector — in particular the energy generation and energy efficiency segments — has experienced headwinds from changing governmental policies.
