Fernand Kong is the manager of the Foreign Exchange Department at Silicon Valley Bank. Kong joined the company in 1996 to establish its foreign exchange function, bringing over 20 years of FX experience at major banks to SVB. Kong built SVB’s FX trading desk with the objective of providing excellent services to meet clients’ needs, including pre-trade advisory services, execution and post-trade settlements, making cross border foreign currency fund transfers and helping clients hedge their FX exposure.
Prior to joining Silicon Valley Bank, Kong served as head of FX derivatives sales at National Westminster Bank, now Royal Bank of Scotland, based in the Bank’s Hong Kong branch. In addition to managing FX risk positions for NatWest, Kong also advised Asian fund managers, multi-national corporations and central banks on the use of FX derivatives and how to structure FX products to mitigate foreign exchange risks.
Kong began his career with Citibank, trading a variety of currencies and acquiring extensive knowledge in foreign exchange. He was then recruited by Bankers Trust Company, now Deutsche Bank, to set up the European currency trading unit in the firm’s Tokyo office. Having established a profitable unit in Tokyo in three years, Kong went on to trade European currencies at the New York headquarters of Bankers Trust.
Kong holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Hong Kong and a master’s degree in business administration from Santa Clara University.
