Ajay Hattangdi is Managing Director of SVB India Finance Pvt. Ltd. In this role, he is responsible for establishing and leading SVB’s specialized lending business in India offering multiple sources of debt and mezzanine capital, as well as advising and assisting SVB to define the strategy and growth of the bank's expansion into India. Hattangdi joined SVB from Citigroup where he spent more than 12 years building relationships and structuring financing solutions for companies in India. He currently serves as a director on the boards of SVB India Finance and SVB India Advisors.
Hattangdi is considered a venture lending pioneer in India. In early 2005, he founded and managed Citigroup's venture debt business in India where he led investments in several early and growth stage venture-backed technology and life science companies. During that time, Hattangdi had the added responsibility of being the head of strategy for the company's corporate and investment bank in India.
In prior roles, Hattangdi has worked in a variety of relationship and industry specialist functions within corporate and investment banking spanning technology, media, life-sciences, and automobile sectors. Hattangdi's other professional experiences include working as a Research Analyst at CRISIL, India’s first credit rating agency, and Miranda Tools Ltd where he started his career as a Management Trainee.
Hattangdi is a co-founder of the PRAJA Foundation (www.praja.org), a voluntary Mumbai-based non-profit organization committed to reestablishing accountability and transparency in public governance. He is also a charter member of the Mumbai chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), a non-profit global network of professionals and entrepreneurs dedicated to nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Hattangdi has a bachelor’s degree in commerce from Sydenham College, a master’s degree in banking & finance from Mumbai University, as well as a master’s degree in business administration from the State University of New York at Buffalo. His other interests include squash, golf, a staple diet of food shows, and an ongoing attempt to understand quantum theory.
