Over the past few months we have witnessed the euro soar higher. The 17-nation currency had appreciated from last year's low of $1.1850 in June and rose near 1.50 on May 4, the strongest since December 2009.

A few years ago, I was driving in San Francisco when someone ran a red light, hitting me in the driver's side. Luckily, we both were uninjured, but this had become such an epidemic throughout the city that the mayor eventually took action.

The outcome of last week's long-awaited FOMC event confirmed the Fed's continued bias toward an accommodative policy. The verbiage of the Fed statement was little changed and quite close to the market expectations that had developed in the weeks leading to the meeting.
