Food Donations Will Support Local Food Banks Throughout The United States

Santa Clara, CA - December 10, 2001 - Silicon Valley Bank collected the equivalent of 87 tons of food in just five days during its Annual National Holiday Food Drive Challenge benefiting the Second Harvest Food Bank and other local food banks. The Bank once again increased the amount of food collected from last year.

Motivated by the chance to win 700 lottery tickets, over 900 employees on 40 teams in 28 offices across the country raced to collect truckloads of food and monetary donations.

The Bank collected 16,000 pounds of food and $41,000 in monetary donations. The Silicon Valley Bank Foundation is planning to donate a monetary contribution of $25,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank, pending its January meeting. Each dollar contributed is equal to 2.4 pounds of food, resulting in the combined donation of over 175,000 pounds.

The collection of food and monetary donations will serve over 58,500 meals to hundreds of families. The Bank's Sand Hill regional office located in Menlo Park, Calif., collected a monetary donation of $35,500 on the final day of the food weigh-in, securing them of first place. Other teams had multiple car- and truckloads of food delivered to the Bank or made last minute grocery store runs for attempts at second and third place.

"Our goal this year was to raise as much food as possible during these very difficult economic times," said Silicon Valley Bank Director of Corporate Communications and food drive coordinator Andrea McGhee. "We are overwhelmed with the generosity of our employees and the impact this donation will have on needy families across the country."

The food donations filled a conference room by the third day of the drive and we had to order a full 50-foot bin to hold the remaining two days of food. By the final day of the food drive, the bin was completely full. Second Harvest Food Bank will be picking up the food from Silicon Valley Bank's corporate headquarters in Santa Clara, Calif., later today.
