SVB Analytics Introduces FAS 157 Service to Help Satisfy Mark to Market Requirements; Service to Aid Venture Capital and Private Equity Firms with Compliance

Company news  |  May 7, 2009

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - May 7, 2009 - SVB Analytics, a leading provider of corporate valuation services, launched a service to assist venture capital and private equity firms with FAS 157 compliance related to the mark to market requirement for their portfolio company investments. As part of the larger move toward fair-value accounting, venture capital and private equity firms are required under this accounting standard to mark their portfolios to market on a quarterly basis.

"Even though we're expecting additional guidance from the FASB on fair-value accounting requirements, our discussions with firms across the country lead us to believe that auditors will expect more supporting information for valuations this year than was accepted for 2008, the first year of implementation for this requirement," said Jim Anderson, president, SVB Analytics. "Having completed more than 1,400 valuation opinions for venture-backed companies, we have the experience and insight to help investors meet compliance requirements and effectively value their holdings for financial reporting purposes, while saving them time and reducing the burden placed on already stretched finance staff members."

The SVB Analytics FAS 157 service includes comparable company and transaction selection, tailored allocation methodologies based on sector and stage, summary portfolio reporting by fund, and access to portfolio company ownership information. With a portfolio company's permission, SVB Analytics can also offer investors information from the SVB Analytics 409A valuation opinion as an additional data point. Detailed information about the mark to market solution for venture capital and private equity firms can be found at http://www.svb.com/pdfs/fas157.pdf.
