In any large city, there will always be a number of people who struggle to recover from adversity. Los Angeles is no exception. Against the backdrop of Hollywood stars, a booming tech sector and the Pacific Ocean, the contrast is particularly stark.
As part of SVB's 30 Years | 30 Causes campaign, we chose to participate in a project that provides housing solutions for the thousands of people without a home in Los Angeles. L.A. Family Housing (LAFH) is a North Hollywood- based organization that leads the region in effective housing solutions to end homelessness in the LA-metro area. Its mission is to help families transition out of homelessness and poverty. Because we spend most of our time around the energy of entrepreneurs working to build a better future, we felt particularly connected to the LAFH mission.
According to the Institute for the Study of Homelessness and Poverty at the Weingart Center, an estimated 254,000 men, women and children experience homelessness in Los Angeles County during some part of the year and approximately 82,000 people are homeless on any given night. Unaccompanied youth, especially in the Hollywood area, are estimated to make up from 4,800 to 10,000 of these. A large portion of the homeless demographic are women and children.
Each year, LAFH helps transition more than 500 households like these (video) from the streets of LA to a supportive housing system.
To help, 15 volunteers from our LA office created and personalized Welcome Home kits for families to receive when they move in, including cleaning supplies to make the first day in a new home a little easier.
We also worked on a landscaping project around the LAFH facility and built a dog run for the families that bring along a furry friend. The work required strong team work, coordination, communication, and some serious muscle. We shoveled and wheeled fresh soil to the grounds, planted trees, and turned an ordinary dog run into an outdoor, canine haven. We were glad to have the opportunity to create something nice for the individuals and families our efforts would support.
There is a great need in our community to raise awareness for the high rate of homelessness in Los Angeles County, and to do something about it. Five hours of work is a minor contribution to making a positive impact on people who are transitioning to a more stable home life. Each year more than 1,000 community volunteers from student organizations, faith institutions, and civic agencies provide 25,000 hours of service to building a better Los Angeles for everyone who lives here.
