Volunteering is a verb, but it’s not just something that you do. It’s also an attitude. It’s a belief that what you are doing will make something a little better or restore a situation from negative to positive. With this in mind, our team was thrilled to be involved in a community project in honor of SVB’s 30th anniversary. We selected a local organization in collaboration with the annual Hands on Atlanta Day, where thousands of Atlanta residents donated their time to many charitable causes in the local area. We found a great place that does excellent work and their name is a suitable moniker for the work they do.
R.E.D.E.E.M. Community Outreach is a non-profit, grassroots organizations committed to improving Atlanta’s West End communities. Since 1993, the organization has developed programs and initiatives that enhance the present community resources, provide education for residents, and concentrate on individual and community-wide development that results in employment and the empowerment of urban dwellers in Atlanta. R.E.D.E.E.M. builds local co-operative gardens, farmers markets and fruit orchards to replace drug infested and abandoned properties and introduce agribusiness to local residents. These efforts are meant to not only beautify the seemingly forgotten landscapes of the city, but also to build awareness and bond community members from all over the city.
During our day with R.E.D.E.E.M., 9 Atlanta SVBers (and 4 family members and friends) spent the day landscaping the organization’s main in-town community garden. It was a great team effort and a lot of fun exercising our green thumbs. We hauled fresh dirt into the garden and made it a suitable place for planting buds and blooms. The team also renovated the surrounding lots to give the entire area a beautiful “like new” effect.
R.E.D.E.E.M. is involved year round in activities from a seasonalfarmers market in Atlanta’s Beltline community to an Annual Toys for Tots drive and a day celebrating senior Atlantans. Check out their current initiatives to see how the garden continues to contribute to the community’s growth.
