Learn more about SVB 30 years | 30 causes
My colleagues at Silicon Valley Bank never fail to deliver when it comes to taking care of people – our clients, our co-workers and the community. This year, we took on a very special cause in honor of our 30th year in business as part of our 30 Years | 30 Causes campaign. The Salt Lake County Division of Youth Services (DYS) has served the Youth in Salt Lake County for nearly four decades with one goal in mind: to provide a place of safety, shelter and support. Inspired by its mission, 60 volunteers from Silicon Valley Bank and many of our friends and family members got together to lend a hand last weekend.
According to DYS, the young people they encounter have grown out of foster care, been discarded from their homes, or escaped from abusive environments without another safe place to go. Milestone Housing Project is a transitional housing program managed by DYS for eleven young adults ages 18 to 22 that are facing homelessness. The program provides safe, stable, and inexpensive housing and services to help its residents become independent and work toward their own permanent housing. Homes are located in West Valley and Sandy and leases are through the Salt Lake County Housing Authority. DYS also oversees the programming and operations the Christmas Box House, a temporary emergency shelter that provides housing, health care, recreational space, and basic needs items for children up to age 11.
The work the DYS is doing is incredibly important to the individuals it serves and the strength of our community at large, so we knew our contribution – no matter how big or small – would help. Our first project was helping to build an outdoor recreation area at the DYS main campus where an on-site therapist will work with teenagers. The space enables activities that help youth dealing with challenging situations to build trust in the staff that is put in place to help. It’s also a place where young people can come to relax and have some much needed fun. Later in the day, we helped to upgrade the women’s Milestones home by refurbishing the interiors and exteriors of the unit. We painted the homes, replaced exterior doors, and some of our younger helpers made art projects to add some color and life to the space.
If nothing else, we hope DYS and the children and young adults it supports know that they have a helping hand in the community. To get involved, visit Salt Lake County Youth Services.
