Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in the world, about 15 percent of Americans did not know where their next meal would come from on a daily basis in 2012, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. In an effort to effectively reach people dealing with food insecurities in Sonoma County, the Redwood Empire Food Bankoperates hunger relief initiatives to assist 78,000 local residents each month. A team from Silicon Valley Bank supported the Food Bank as part of SVB's 30 Years | 30 Causes celebration campaign.
Our afternoon with the organization began with orientation and tour of the food bank. We learned about the difficulties of living with hunger(some of what we learned is not so obvious) and the challenges that low-income families face trying to buy enough food while making ends meet. In an assembly line fashion, we prepared 200 boxes of food items for distribution to needy families. The final step was to quality check the boxes by weight and place them on a pallet.
We also sorted and prepared large crates of apples and carrots from local farms that were suitable for distribution to local families.
Access to healthy food and optimal nutrition is a core concern for the Food Bank, which also promotes sustainability of the local food supply through its food donation process. For example, any produce found to be unsuitable was sorted out to be distributed to a local animal farm.
Thirty SVB volunteers and spouses, from SVB's Product Development and Channel Delivery Team came from all over the country and the UK to attend the fall Product Development and Channel Delivery Team. Our group enjoyed kicking off the meeting in a new way by helping a local organization in its mission to make real change in our community. After a few hours of work, we walked away with more knowledge about what's happening in our local area as well as practical ways that we can continue to support it.
