Due to a lack of affordable, safe places for young people to go after school or on the weekends to spend their free time, small volunteer organisations bridge the gap. Often local, council-funded community centres operate as a hub for recreation and sports, career services and places to host important community events. Historically, these resources have been vital to the strength of many communities especially in less flourishing areas of London.
Over the past year, the SVB UK team has worked closely with London Youth, an organisation that supports a large network of 400 youth organisations across the capital. As an extension of our work with London Youth, and with the help of HandsOn London, we recently participated in a project for Haileybury Youth Centre, based in Tower Hamlets as part of Silicon Valley Bank’s 30 Years | 30 Causes campaign in honor of our 30th year in business. The centre provides after school clubs and a variety of activities such as sports, drama, and art for different age groups. Our aim was to offer an opportunity for fun and education for youth in East London.
An energised team of SVB employees along with some family and friends met at the Centre to volunteer at a family fun day and community outreach event. We shared responsibilities of conducting sports and art activities and led career workshops for young people who were interested.
SVB volunteers made signs for all the stations throughout the fun zone and we felt like kids again looking after little ones jumping in the Bouncy Castle, participating in family-friendly games, and face painting. We even put our culinary skills to work by serving up a delicious BBQ and decorating cakes that were served for dessert. Toys and books were donated by employees in the UK Branch and given away as gifts on the day.
For SVB, having the opportunity to contribute in the community has proven to help build teamwork and a sense of pride among our employees. For much of our history, community involvement has been core to our culture and we encourage our clients and partners to find a way to get involved. It’s for the greater good, and it’s good for your team.
